Mombasa Campus Library

Mount Kenya University Mombasa Campus Library is located at 9th Floor of MKU Plaza Mombasa along Nkurumah Road, next to KEBS Building Mombasa City. Our library works hard to offer the university community the best materials and services possible. The library understands the value of member consultation, evaluating how important resources and services are used, and giving decision-makers information for resource allocation and planning. Maintaining the library’s alignment with the university’s overall objectives will be essential to its success. The standing of Mount Kenya University as a highly regarded university keeps expanding. In a same vein, the library maintains its position as a pioneer in the transformation, preservation, and accessibility of enviable information resources. We also work to convert our university’s varied and evolving research demands into cutting-edge and useful information and service experiences.

Library Seating Capacity

The library has a seating capacity of 295 at reading area and 20 more at e-learning section for users with free space for expansion.

The library services are fully automated and managed by KOHA integrated software and has various sections such as technical section, circulation desk, E-learning/Multimedia Section, Reading area, Stack area and Past papers section.

Library Accessibility

All users, especially those who attend classes in the evening, can visit the library during convenient hours. All users receive information and instruction from the library staff in collaboration with the academic staff through a well-organized information competency program that includes staff guidance, new library user orientation, clearly labelled shelves easy to browse, and the availability of an online public access catalogue (OPAC). Participants in the course learn how to access the print monographs and electronic resources and CD-ROMs that the library offers, as well as information literacy skills.

Books Allowed for Borrowing

  • Undergraduate: Up to 4 books for 14 days
  • Postgraduate: Up to 4 books for 30 days
  • Staff: Up to 4 books for 30 days

  • Monday to Friday: 8.00 AM – 8.00 PM
  • Saturday:                 8.00 AM – 4.00 PM
  • Sunday: CLOSED
  • Public Holidays: 9.00AM – 1:00PM

Digital Library

The Digital Library is available around-the-clock via the My LOFT platform.

Organization and Access to Information Resources

Using the most recent version of the Anglo American cataloguing rules (AACR2), library information resources are arranged according to the Library of Congress Cataloguing scheme (LCC). Everyone can access the library’s online public access catalogue (OPAC) through the University website because it is web-based (opac.mku.ac.ke).

Information resources are both in print and electronic format and stocking of the resources is guided by the MKU library collection development policy based on sound mind decision.

Mount Kenya University library is a member of Kenya Library and Information Services Consortium (KLISC) which consolidates subscriptions to e-resources for subscribed Universities in Kenya. The library also has an active institutional repository available online via the library access links: erepository.mku.ac.ke, for resources produced by MKU community.
